What are the CrossFit Games

The CrossFit Games are a global fitness sports event by the CrossFit brand. It is also considered the world championship of the sport of the same name. The goal is to find the fittest athletes in the world in their respective categories. Every year, CrossFit athletes gather to push their physical and mental limits and compete in a series of ultimate tests. A unique aspect is that anyone who practices CrossFit can sign up for the qualifying round for $20. But how did the Games begin? How can you qualify for them? What categories exist, and what is the significance of the CrossFit Games today?

How it started

The first CrossFit Games took place in 2007 on Dave Castro's ranch in California. He was the Director of the CrossFit Games until 2022 and was therefore responsible for the event. Initially, it was a smaller, casual event where people met to exercise and have fun. Videos of it can still be found on YouTube today. Since these humble beginnings, the Games have evolved into an internationally recognized competition that attracts thousands of athletes and millions of spectators every year. Today, the CrossFit Games are the event of the year in the world of CrossFit.

How you get there

The path to the CrossFit Games begins for all athletes with the Open. Yes, even for the pros. Anyone who does CrossFit can register on the official homepage for $20. During the Opens, one weekly workout must be completed over a period of three weeks. So, a total of three workouts. You will find out what the WODs look like at the time of the official announcement. You can either submit your workout as a video or complete it in a CrossFit box. Most boxes host a small event for the Opens with all participating athletes and sometimes spectators. So, this is a place where you can get a taste of the competition atmosphere. The workouts are designed so that any participant with normal fitness can complete them.

In 2024, the top 25% of the respective regions (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America East/West, South America, and Oceania) move on to the Quarterfinals. Previously, it was only the top 10% of athletes. This is where things start to get serious. Four workouts must be completed within three days. The goal is clearly to filter out once again who has what it takes to compete in the following rounds and, ultimately, at the Games.

After the Quarterfinals, the best athletes in their region advance to the Semifinals. There, the 40 best individuals from their region, the best 30 teams from their region, and the 200 best in each age group category compete. While the individual athletes (all between 18 and 34 years old) and the teams now compete at a live event, the rest must go through another online qualification. By the time the Semifinals arrive, it's serious business. Age Group athletes (all over 35) must complete four workouts within four days. For teams, it is 5 in three days, and for individuals, 6 in three days.

That is how it is in 2024. It is possible that the qualification process will look a little different in the future.

The Final: The CrossFit Games

The final, the CrossFit Games, traditionally takes place in the summer and spans several days. The best athletes from the individual regions gather in one place to complete a multitude of workouts that are only announced shortly before the start. These workouts are designed to test all aspects of fitness, including endurance, strength, agility, speed, and strategic thinking. Anyone who competes here is among the best of the best. The CrossFit Games are a huge spectacle and are broadcast live on various channels.

What categories are there

The CrossFit Games offer various competition formats and categories to accommodate a wide range of athletes:

  • Individual competitions: Here, men and women compete against each other in separate categories. They must complete a variety of workouts that test all aspects of fitness.
  • Team competitions: Teams usually consist of two men and two women and must complete workouts designed for cooperation and teamwork.
  • Age categories (Age Group): This includes the Masters categories (starting at age 35 in 5-year increments) and the Teen categories (14-15 and 16-17 years old). These categories have adapted workouts that correspond to the abilities and needs of the respective age groups.

How are the individual workouts scored

Scoring at the CrossFit Games is based on a point system. Athletes receive points based on their placement in each workout. The athlete or team with the highest total score at the end of all workouts wins the title. This system ensures that every performance counts and the competition remains exciting until the very last moment. There are also frequent so-called "cuts"—a point in time where only a certain number, for example, the top 40 or top 20, move on and the rest are eliminated.

The importance of the CrossFit Games

The CrossFit Games have not only increased the popularity of CrossFit worldwide but have also influenced fitness culture as a whole. In the meantime, the CrossFit Games and the entire qualification process with the Open and subsequent competition phases have developed into the most important event of the year on the CrossFit calendar. They promote a holistic approach to fitness that emphasizes functional movements, high intensity, and a strong community bond. Many of the workouts and training methods used at the Games have found their way into the daily lives of fitness enthusiasts and into CrossFit boxes all over the world.
