Hook Grip Tape that holds. Lift after lift. The Daumendreher Hook Grip Tape gives you grip strength in the hook grip – for snatches, cleans & jerks, heavy deadlifts, and long sets on the pull-up bar. It stays firmly in place, doesn't slip under load, and keeps the skin on your thumb intact even after many repetitions. You can peel it off cleanly after your workout.
What’s in it for you:
- Holds even when you sweat: sweat-resistant cotton fabric that absorbs chalk – no coming loose in the middle of a WOD.
- Peels off cleanly: zinc oxide rubber adhesive, no sticky residue on your thumb.
- Won’t tear, but easy to tear off: withstands tough workouts and can still be torn by hand without scissors.
- Perfect width: 3.8 cm covers the thumb while leaving the fingernail free – important so the thumb can tuck neatly under the fingers.
Who this tape is for. For weightlifters, CrossFitters, powerlifters, and calisthenics athletes who use the hook grip – in training and competition. Among athletes, it’s also called CrossFit tape, weightlifting tape, or thumb tape. It all means the same thing: grip for your thumb when the bar gets heavy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hands clean, dry, and free of any lotion residue. Hold the end of the tape roll against your thumb and wrap the tape firmly, but not too tightly, around it twice.
Only tear the tape off afterward—and make sure the end is not positioned where the barbell will press against your thumb later. Then, enclose the taped thumb with your other hand and press the tape firmly all the way around.
Wait 2 to 3 minutes before starting your workout—body heat allows the adhesive to reach its full bonding strength. Tip: apply tape before training, not during. Detailed instructions: How to apply the tape correctly.
Yes, as long as the skin is dry when applying. The adhesive needs a moment of body heat to fully bond – once set, it will even hold through sweat-inducing WODs.
Kinesio tape is designed for physiotherapy. The surface glides smoothly and barely absorbs chalk, the material is too stretchy longitudinally and rolls up under load like a party streamer. As soon as sweat and chalk come into play, the adhesive detaches.
Athletic tape from the pharmacy is too rigid. It blocks the distal joint of the thumb and acts like a tourniquet under the load of a heavy lift – the result is numbness because your body reduces the blood supply to the forearm.
Hook Grip Tape has 10–20% stretch – enough for mobility without blocking blood circulation. The rough cotton surface absorbs chalk deep into the fibers, the zinc oxide rubber adhesive holds despite sweat, and 3.8 cm is the anatomical ideal size for the thumb.
Read more: Why kinesio tape ruins your hook grip.
At 3.8 cm, the tape is wide enough for optimal protection, yet leaves the fingernail free – important for the hook grip, because otherwise the thumb cannot properly hook under the bar.
Yes. After training, peel it off starting from a corner in the opposite direction of the wrap – the skin remains clean, no adhesive residue, no need to rub off with oil or water.
If you do happen to see a small residue (usually with very oily skin), a quick rub with your other hand is enough. That was the basic requirement during development – anything else is not a serious hook grip tape to me.
With three training sessions per week and two taped thumbs per session, one roll lasts for approximately six to eight weeks. Those who only tape on heavy days or wrap sparingly will make it last significantly longer.
For long-term use, the 6-pack or 10-pack bundle is worth it – cheaper per roll, and you'll always have supplies in your gym bag.
Store your thumb tape dry at room temperature. The adhesive can soften in a hot car trunk in summer — it is best kept in your gym bag or in a cupboard at home. Stored correctly, a roll will last for several years.
