The world of barbells in CrossFit

If you regularly engage in strength training, you have surely trained with many different barbells. But have you ever wondered why they feel different? Or why there are so many different versions? Every barbell is specifically designed for certain applications, and the right choice can significantly improve your training. Let's take a closer look at the most important types of barbells and find out which one best suits your training.

Olympic Barbell

The Olympic barbell is the most common barbell you will find in a gym or CrossFit box. It is 2.20 meters long and weighs 20 kg for men and 15 kg for women. What is special about this barbell are the rotating sleeves. These help to relieve the wrists, especially during dynamic movements like the snatch and the clean and jerk. Olympic barbells are flexible and robust, which makes them ideal for explosive movements in weightlifting. The Olympic barbell has moderate to aggressive knurling. This means that the ribbing on the bar is deep enough to offer a good grip, but at the same time not so aggressive that it tears your skin. This is particularly important for fast and dynamic movements.

Powerlifting Barbell

Powerlifting barbells are similar to Olympic barbells but are somewhat stiffer and often have additional knurling in the center. These barbells are designed for heavy compound exercises like squats, bench presses, and deadlifts. The extra knurling provides more hold for squats, and the stiffer construction ensures more stability with very heavy weights. However, this stability also means that the bar gives less when lifted from the floor. This can make it feel as though the weight is heavier than with an Olympic barbell. Powerlifting barbells often have very aggressive knurling.

Technique Barbell

Technique barbells are lighter and often shorter than Olympic barbells. They usually weigh 10 kg or less and are made of lightweight material such as aluminum. These barbells are perfect for beginners or for those who want to refine their technique. With a technique barbell, you can practice movements without being excessively burdened by the weight of the bar.

Trap Bar (Hex Bar)

The Trap Bar, also called a Hex Bar, has a hexagonal shape in the middle of which you stand. This bar is mainly used for deadlifts and shrugs. The advantage of the Trap Bar is that it relieves the lower back and enables a more upright posture. This makes it particularly suitable for beginners and people with back problems. There are also versions with different grip thicknesses.

Safety Squat Bar

The Safety Squat Bar has padding for the neck and shoulder area as well as handles that extend forward. Additionally, the ends are bent so that the weight is closer to the body's center of gravity. This bar was specifically developed for squats and offers more stability while reducing pressure on the shoulders and wrists. This is especially useful for people with shoulder problems, limited shoulder mobility, or those who need additional stability during squats.

Multi-Grip Bar (Swiss Bar)

The Multi-Grip Bar, also called a Swiss Bar, looks more like a rectangle with various handles than a barbell. This bar enables various grip variants that target different muscle groups and reduce the strain on the shoulders and elbows. It is versatile and can be used for exercises like bench presses, rows, and triceps exercises.

Cambered Bar

The Cambered Bar is bent and changes the center of gravity of the weights. This special shape helps to specifically train muscle groups and vary the training. It is frequently used for squats, bench presses, and good mornings.

Log Bar

The Log Bar looks like a large cylinder with two openings and welded-in handles. It is mainly used in Strongman training for exercises like the log press. The design of the log bar is intended to imitate tree trunks.

Conclusion

Each of these barbells has its own advantages and can help you optimize your training. As a CrossFitter, it is important to know and use the right tools to reach your fitness goals. Whether you want to improve your technique, lift heavier weights, or simply vary your routine – there is the perfect barbell for you. By choosing the right barbell, you can ensure that you train efficiently and safely and reach your personal bests. So, the next time you are in the gym, try out a new barbell and discover how it can change your training.
