The CrossFit benchmark WOD Grace
Grace is one of the simplest benchmark workouts in CrossFit. It consists of only one movement. These standardized workouts serve not only as a performance comparison but also as a mercilessly honest assessment of your current fitness level. Anyone who has dared to take on Grace knows: it is certainly not easy. In this article, you will learn what is behind Grace, which strategies make sense, how you can scale the workout, and what constitutes a good result.
What the workout looks like
Grace consists of one round for time.
- 30 Clean and Jerks (61 kg/43 kg)
What are strategies for Grace
Although Grace looks simple, you can burn out mercilessly if you don't approach it tactically.
Singles: Many experienced athletes rely on fast singles: drop the barbell and go straight into the next repetition. This keeps every rep controlled and reduces the risk of overpacing.
Touch-and-go sets: If you have good grip strength and feel comfortable, you can work with touch-and-go sets, e.g., 6–5–5–4–4–3–3. This variation makes sense if you only need a short break between sets. Otherwise, there is a risk of collapsing significantly later on.
What scaling options are there
Weight:
- Reduce the weight so that you can complete at least 5–8 repetitions without needing a long break.
Repetitions:
- Set the number of repetitions so that they challenge you but don't destroy you completely.
Clean and Jerk:
- Replace the Clean and Jerk with, for example, a Hang Power Clean + Push Press if the full range of motion is difficult for you.
What is a good result for Grace
- Beginner: 6–8 minutes
- Intermediate: 4–6 minutes
- Rx athlete: 3–4 minutes
- Elite athlete: under 2:30 minutes
Conclusion
Grace is more than just a sprint with a barbell. It is a test of focus, technique under pressure, and mental grind. The movement is clear, the task is simply stated, yet the workout itself is a real challenge. That is exactly where the appeal lies: 30 repetitions, one exercise, maximum intensity. The key lies in the combination of good technique, sensible tactics, and mental perseverance.
